Thyroid disorder

Thyroid disorders impact how your body uses energy. The thyroid gland in your neck produces thyroid hormones that control your metabolism. When your thyroid makes too many or too few hormones, it can cause problems.
Some common thyroid disorders include:

Hypothyroidism
- This is when your thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. It slows down your metabolism.
- Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, muscle weakness, and more.

Hyperthyroidism
- This is when your gland makes too much thyroid hormone. It speeds up your metabolism.
- Symptoms may include anxiety, trouble sleeping, weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and more.

Thyroid nodules
- These are lumps that form in or on the thyroid. Most are noncancerous. But some may need to be checked for cancer.

Thyroid cancer
- This is uncommon but can happen. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination.

Hashimoto’s disease
- This is an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks the thyroid gland. The thyroid makes less and less hormone over time.

Graves’ disease
- This is also an autoimmune disease. But with Graves', your immune system causes the thyroid to make too much hormone.

If you have symptoms of a thyroid disorder, see your doctor. They can do blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound to check how your thyroid gland is working. Based on the results, they may prescribe synthetic thyroid medication to help manage your levels.
